IB Middle Years Programme
Back

Students who have completed junior high at an IB Middle Years school are eligible to enter the final year of the MYP programme at Holy Trinity.

The MYP programme focuses on:

Holistic Learning: An approach to teaching and learning that emphasizes the interrelatedness of subject areas and of these subjects to the real world. Students learn to combine relevant knowledge, experience and critical thinking to solve authentic problems.

Intercultural Awareness: The development of students’ attitudes, knowledge and skills as they learn about their own and others’ social and national cultures. The programme encourages students to consider multiple perspectives.

Communication: Good command of one’s own language enables clear expression of ideas, attitudes and feelings. Listening to what others have to say, self-reflection, and encouraging various forms of expression are all part of communication. The learning of other languages extends that competence and teaches appreciation of different cultures and ways of thinking.

Areas of Interaction: Five important elements known as the areas of interaction focus on students’ intellectual and social development. They provide a framework of learning, allowing connections among the core subjects.

The five areas of interaction are:

  • Approaches to Learning
        How do I learn best?
        How do I know?
How do I communicate my understanding?

  • Community and Service
How do we live in relation to each other?
How can I contribute to the community?
        How can I help others?

  • Human Ingenuity
Why and how do we create?
        What are the consequences?

  • Environments
        Where do we live?
What resources do we have or need?
        What are my responsibilities?

  • Health and Social Education
How do I think and act?
        How am I changing?
How can I look after myself and others?

These areas are addressed through core subjects but also through interdisciplinary teaching, school wide activities and the personal project.

Personal Project: a significant independent piece of work that is intended to be the culmination of the student’s sustained involvement with the five areas of interaction and the MYP programme. The personal project begins in grade 9 and must be completed in grade 10.
