Science
Back to Courses

Science is a human activity which is directed towards increasing our knowledge about the composition and behavior of matter, both living and non-living. Many of the issues that society must face will be science related. As citizens of one of the most technologically advanced countries in the world, it is essential that we be scientifically literate.

All science courses have moved toward a STS (science, technology, society) approach. Science course content takes into consideration technological development and scientific advancement and the impact they have on our lives. Science courses share a common goal of enhancing the critical thinking, problem solving and laboratory skills of the students.

RECOMMENDED PREREQUISITES:

When selecting a 20 level science, students should consider their personal interests as well as their postsecondary goals. It is recommended that students select one or two science courses in order to complete their high school diploma. Taking three or more 30 level (grade 12) sciences seriously affects other courses/options available to students who are restricted to a three year high school program.

SCIENCE 10 (5 credits) Full Year
The Science 10 course, which has been revised for implementation in September 2004, is intended for students entering grade 10 with a mark of 60% or better in grade 9 science. The program emphasizes an STS approach and it integrates the disciplines of biology, chemistry, physics and environmental science. The focus is on developing critical thinking and process skills in conjunction with rigorous science context. This course now has a large component of interactive technology as well. The main themes are: Energy from the Sun, Energy and Matter in Living Systems, Energy and Matter in Chemical Change, and Change and Energy.

SCIENCE 14 (5 credits) Full Year
Science 14 is a general applied science course intended for students who had trouble in grade 9 science. The course has been revised and was implemented in September 2002. The topics include: Investigating Matter and Energy in Living Systems, and Investigating Matter and Energy in the Environment.
Prerequisite: Students who achieved less than 50% in grade 9 science should register in this course.

SCIENCE 20 (5 credits) Semestered... numbers permitting
This course integrates various science disciplines (ie. Biology, Chemistry, Physics) and is a continuation of the approach developed in Science 10. The program of studies focuses on developing critical thinking and process skills in addition to the rigorous science content in order to prepare the student for subsequent study in the 30 level sciences. This course has 4 units of study:
  • The Changing Earth
  • Changes in Living Systems
  • Chemical Changes
  • Changes in Motion

    SCIENCE 24 (5 credits) Semestered
Science 24 is a continuation of the approach developed in Science 14. The Science 24 program provides additional information and provides a better understanding of how things work. The course has been revised and is ready for implementation in September 2003. This course has four basic units: disease defense, materials you use, energy consumption and safe transportation.

SCIENCE 30 (5 credits) Semestered... numbers permitting
Science 30 is intended for students who want to better understand the scientific principles behind the natural events they experience and the technology they use in their daily lives. Science 30 is composed of four units:
  • Living Systems Respond
  • Chemistry in the Environment
  • Electromagnetic Energy
  • Energy and the Environment
Science 30 is accepted at the U of A in the Faculty of Arts, Nursing, and for many programs at NAIT and Grant MacEwan College.
