Physical activity is vital to all aspects of normal growth and development, and the benefits are widely recognized. The new secondary curriculum for physical education focuses on an “active living” approach. The goal is to enable students to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to lead active, healthy lives. Students will:
  • Acquire skills through a variety of developmentally appropriate movement activities in a number of environments.
  • Understand, experience and appreciate the health benefits of physical activity.
  • Interact positively with others.
  • Assume personal responsibility to lead an active way of life.
  • The curriculum involves a wide variety of activities, therefore active participation in all units is necessary for successful completion of the course.
    SKI / SNOWBOARD TRIP
    We offer a one day ski/snowboard trip to the mountains during February for all Physical Education 10 students. A two day trip is organized for Physical Education 20/30 students during March. This is a favorite activity of our students.

    MILL WOODS RECREATION CENTER
    We are fortunate to have our school attached to the recreation center. We use the facility for the following activities:

  • snorkeling
  • broom ball
  • underwater hockey
  • skating
  • scuba diving
  • racquetball
  • aquasize
  • swimming
  • squash
  • water polo

  • OUTDOOR PURSUITS
    A number of these lifelong activities are included in our program:

  • mountain bike riding
  • canoeing
  • orienteering
  • inline skating
  • snowboarding
  • camping

  • ELITE ATHLETE PROGRAM
    This program is designed for elite athletes who compete at a provincial, national or international level. The program allows flexible scheduling for the student. Our administration will provide an individualized program to suit the extracurricular demands of training and competition schedules.

    PHYSICAL EDUCATION 10 (5 credits)
    This course is a requirement for a high school diploma. The focus of this course is on both team and individual sports which may include:

  • PHYSICAL EDUCATION 20 (3 or 5 credits)
    Students will acquire skills through a variety of activities. Students will understand, experience and appreciate the health benefits that result from physical activity. Some of the activities may include:

  • inline skating

  • indoor soccer
  • step aerobics
  • broom ball
  • fitness testing

  • handball
  • field hockey

  • One aspect of the curriculum is leadership. Students will apply, monitor and assess leadership skills related to physical activities and demonstrate an understanding of leadership skills related to implementing physical activity events or programs in the school. Students are required to complete a minimum of 15 hours (8 hours for 3 credit). These hours must be completed in order to be considered for Phys. Ed. 30.

    Prerequisite: Physical Education 10. Students must complete this course with a minimum final mark of 65% or teacher permission in order to enroll in Physical Education 20.

    PHYSICAL EDUCATION 30 (5 credits)
    Students will participate in a number of environments . Students will understand, experience and appreciate the health benefits that result from physical activity. Some of the activities may include:

  • broom ball

  • One aspect of the curriculum is leadership. Students will apply, monitor and assess leadership skills related to physical activities and demonstrate an understanding of leadership skills related to implementing physical activity events or programs in the school. Students are required to complete a minimum of 20 hours.

    Prerequisite: Physical Education 20. Students must complete this course with a minimum final mark of 70% or teacher permission in order to enroll in Physical Education 30. Leadership hours from Phys.Ed 20 must be completed for a student to be considered in Phys. Ed 30.

    It should be noted that Physical Education 30 can be used as one of required courses for acceptance to some faculties at university and other post secondary institutions.
