Check out Math Problems of the Month!

RECOMMENDED PREREQUISITES:

MATH 10 PURE (5 credits) Full Year
The outcomes of the Pure Math courses place more emphasis on precise mathematical theory. The approaches used are primarily algebraic and graphical. The purchase of a graphing calculator with financial functions is recommended. This course is recommended for those students who are interested in pursuing the math and/or science related fields in post-secondary institutions. Topics include: Number systems, operation on polynomials, coordinate geometry and graphing, systems of linear equations, statistics, equations and inequalities, factoring polynomials and trigonometry.
Recommended Prerequisite: 65% in Grade 9 Math

MATH 10 APPLIED (5 credits) Full Year
The outcomes of the Applied Math courses emphasize the application of mathematics rather than precise mathematical theory. The approaches used are primarily numerical and geometrical. This course is recommended for those students who are interested in pursuing the math and/or science related fields in post-secondary technical schools. The purchase of a graphing calculator is mandatory. Topics include: Number concepts and operations, patterns and relations, shape and space, statistics and probability.
Prerequisite: 50% in Grade 9 Math

MATH 20 PURE (5 credits) Semestered
The outcomes of the Pure Math courses place more emphasis on precise mathematical theory. The approaches are primarily algebraic and graphical. Topics include: systems of equations, linear inequalities, functions, quadratic functions and equations, mathematical reasoning, circle geometry and coordinate geometry.
Recommended Prerequisite: 60% in Math 10 Pure

MATH 20 APPLIED (5 credits) Semestered
The emphasis in Math 20 Applied is on application of mathematics rather than mathematical theory. The approaches are numerical and geometrical. This course is recommended for those students who are interested in pursuing the math and/or science related fields in post-secondary technical schools. Topics include: Graphing and design, regression and non-linear equations, systems and linear programming, finance, circle geometry and design, measurement and design.
Prerequisite: 50% in Math 10 Applied

MATH 30 PURE (5 credits) Semestered
The outcomes of the Pure Math courses place more emphasis on precise mathematical theory. The approaches are primarily algebraic and graphical. Topics include: transformations, exponents and logarithms, conics, trigonometry, sequences and series, permutation and combinations, statistics and probability.
Recommended Prerequisite: 60% in Math 20 Pure

Note: The Math 20 Pure and Math 30 Pure programs are theoretical and abstract in nature. They are designed for students who are strong in mathematics. Students interested in the fields of mathematics and science at university or college are advised to take these courses.

MATH 30 APPLIED (5 credits) Semestered
The emphasis in Math 30 Applied is on application of mathematics rather than mathematical theory. The approach is primarily data driven, using numerical and geometrical problem solving techniques. Technology is an integral part of the course. Topics include: Matrices and Pathways, Statistics and Probability, Finance, Vectors, Cyclic, Recursive and Fractal Patterns, and Design.
Prerequisite: 50% in Math 20 Applied

MATH 31 (5 credits) Semestered
The core topic of Math 31 is calculus (derivatives, applications, integration) for algebraic, trigonometric, exponential and logarithmic functions. The elective topics include volumes of revolution. A student with interests in applications of calculus to biology, business & economics and engineering at post-secondary universities should register in this course.
Recommended Prerequisite: 60% in Math 30 Pure

MATH 10 PREPERATION (5 credits) Semestered
The Math 10 Preparation course is designed for students who had difficulties in junior high, but have a strong desire to improve and to get into the Applied or Pure stream. The course is an upgrade of the grade 7, 8 and 9 mathematics programs with a heavy emphasis on basic skills.
Prerequisite: Students with less than 50% in grade 9 math may register in this course.

MATH 14 (5 credits) Full Year
The Math 14 program is designed for students who had difficulties in mathematics in junior high school. The primary focus is on basic mathematical skills. Diagnosis of student difficulties and remediation is stressed. Math 14 topics include: number systems, measurement, ratio and rate, data presentations and algebra. In addition a number of electives dealing with consumer math are covered.
Prerequisite: Students with less than 50% in grade 9 math may register in this course.

MATH 24 (5 credits) Semestered
Math 24 topics include: attitudes, problem solving, numeration and geometry and measurement as well as elective units. The Math 24 program satisfies the mathematics requirement for the Alberta High School Diploma but is not accepted by many post-secondary institutions.
Prerequisite: 50% in Math 14
