Biology is the study of living things and their interrelationships.

BIOLOGY 20 (5 credits) Semestered
Biology is the study of life. As with all science, it is an experimental discipline requiring creativity and imagination in the conduct of scientific inquiry. The program will encourage students to further develop their ability to ask questions, investigate and experiment; to gather, analyze and assess biological information, and to test scientific laws and biological principles and their applications. Students will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of the processes by which scientific knowledge is developed and of the interdependent relationships of science, technology and society. Biology 20 consists of four units of study which build upon the scientific principles mastered in Science 10:
  • Unit 1: The Biosphere – the region of the Earth where life exists
  • Unit 2: Cellular Matter and Energy Flows – biochemistry, photosynthesis and cellular respiration
  • Unit 3: Matter and Energy Exchange in Ecosystems – living organisms and how they interact with each other and their environment
  • Unit 4: Matter and Energy Exchange by the Human Organism – digestive, respiratory, excretory and circulatory systems
    Prerequisite: 60% in Science 10

    BIOLOGY 30 (5 credits) Semestered
Biology 30 continues to develop the scientific principles of exchange of matter and energy flow that were introduced in Science 10 and Biology 20. The common theme of the interdependent relationships of science, technology and society is further explored. This demanding course consists of four units of study:
  • Unit 1: Systems Regulating Change in Human Organisms
  • Unit 2: Human Reproduction and Development
  • Unit 3: Mitosis, Meiosis, Genes, Heredity, DNA and Protein Synthesis Unit
  • Unit 4: Population Genetics and Ecology
A number of inquiry-based laboratory experiments involving investigative techniques are used to support the above units.
    Prerequisite: 60% in Science 20
